Welcome to Chicago kalakshetra. We are a non profitable organization to foster the traditional Hindu temple arts of Kerala, India to the people of Kerala (or Indian) origin, living in the United States of America, nurture goodwill and understanding between people of India and the United States of America through education and cultural exchanges.

Chicago Kalakshetra proudly presents, Kalakshetra Kalolsavam 2019 – An exclusive Talent Hunt competition for aspiring young talents in the Greater Chicago region. The contestants will be competing for a wide variety of music & dance items to win big prizes and the prestigious Kalakshetra Kalaprathibha and Kalathilakam titles.

The winners will have an opportunity to perform during Kalakshetra Vishu and Onam celebrations

The event will be held on Saturday, March, 16th 2019 at St Thomas Syro Malabar Cathedral Auditorium in Bellwood IL ( 5000 St Charles Rd, Bellwood, IL 60104).

Kalolsavam Rules and Regulations

1. All contests are categorized into two – dance & music/others

2. The last day of registration for Kalolsavam 2019 will be March 2nd, 2019

3. Registration fee for group event is $10.00 per participant

4. Registration fee for each participant per each individual item will be $15.00

5. All participants should report to the assigned area 30 minutes before competition.

6. Contest will be categorized based on the following age group: Sub Junior (1st – 4th grade), Junior (5th-8th grade), Senior (9th – 12th grade)

7. Spelling bee competitions are limited to only Sub Junior (1st – 4th grade) and Junior ( 5th-8th grade )

8. Kalaprathiba (Male) and Kalathilakam (Female) must win at least one prize in both category 1 and 2. Must score more points than any other contestants in single

9. Points earned in group items will not consider for Kalaprathiba and Kalathilakam. Only in case of tie between 2 contestants, points earned from the group items will be considered to determine Kalaprathiba or Kalathilakam.

10. Kalathilakam must need to be a winner of one of the classical dance contest ( Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi and Kathak)

11. Only junior and senior age group will be considering for Kalathilakam and Kalaprathibha

12. Sub junior winner will be awarded as “Rising Star”

13. No contestant can register for more than five single items, excluding group items

14. There must be at least three participants in a group item and maximum 15 participants. The category for group item is decided by the school grade of the oldest participant.

15. Kalolsavam Committee reserves the rights to cancel any competition and/or to change the venue, time, order, rules and/or disqualify

16. In determining the winners, Judges Decision will be final

17. Karaoke is allowed for music competition.

18. All participants should bring necessary materials needed for their competition.

19. If an item has 3 or more participants, points will be distributed as follows: 1st prize – 5 points, 2nd prize – 3 points, 3rd prize – 1

20. Music CD’s or USB drives that contains music must be given to the competition organizers 15 minutes before the competition and must make sure that it plays in Windows or Mac before the program starts.

21. Participants should adhere to the specified time limit allotted for each

22. Male participant who scores maximum points in single item will be adjudged as Kalaprathibha

23. Female participant who scores maximum points in single item will be adjudged as Kalathilakam.

24. For Cinematic/Semi Classical Dance individuals / teams can use any Indian movie/popular songs

25. For Western Dance no Indian movie/popular songs allowed

26. For any group items one participant cannot contest in more than once in same item in the same age category. But they may participate in another older age group (For example, if the contestant participated in Bharathanatyam for Sub Junior, they may participate in Junior Bharathanatyam or Senior Bharathanatyam

Panchavadyam, literally meaning an orchestra of five instruments, is basically a temple art form that has evolved in Kerala. Of the five instruments, four — timila, maddalam, ilathalam and idakka — belong to the percussion category, while the fifth one, kombu, is a wind instrument.

Chicago Kalakshetra is proud to have an amazing Panchavadyam team lead by Shri Ajikumar Bhaskaran.  Chicago Kalakshetra team plays Panchavadyam during every year at Vishu, Onam and also have played during other occasions in various different stages in different states in the United States

Chenda Melam

Chenda is a cylindrical drum instrument played in the state of Kerala.  Chenda is often played inside the temples during various events.  Chicago Kalakshetra teaches and plays Chenda Melam which includes Panchari Melam also known as Ilanjithara Melam, Chembada Melam and Srinkari Melam.

Chicago Kalakshetra has performed Chenda Melams at various different stages among different communities.

Malayalam and Bhajan classes

We at Chicago Kalakshetra realizes how important it is to promote the traditional values among our children, hence apart from having Panchavadyam and Chenda classes, we also teach Malayalam classes which includes teaching letters, spoken Malayalam also introduce children to our ancient Indian epics such as Ramayana, Mahabharata and other short stories.
